As an electrical engineer, Alex Dow worked for Brush Electric Company and Edison Illuminating Company. In 1912 he became the President of Edison where he served until his retirement in 1938. Though his formal education ended at the age of twelve, Mr. Dow was the recipient of two honorary degrees from the University of Michigan and honorary memberships in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE). Mr. Dow was awarded the Edison medal by the AIEE in 1937.
The papers of Alex Dow include autobiographical materials and correspondence relating the various awards and honors received by Mr. Dow throughout his distinguished career.
