The UAW Social Security Department was organized in 1948 under the direction of Harry Becker. It provides professional and technical advice in designing, implementing, and improving collectively bargained private and public sector employment-related benefits and has provided many gains for union employees in job security and health care, retirement, and unemployment benefits. Their records document the services it provided UAW members as well as its lobbying efforts on behalf of national health care and social security public programs.
