  Members of AFSCME Local 1834 inside a bus. The Garrett County, Maryland road workers went on strike for 227 days in 1970.
According to the August 1970 issue of AFSCME’s Public Employee magazine, “A bus for scabs entered the lot and its tires somehow deflated in minutes. Strikers boarded it instead of scabs.”
