The Society of Tool Engineers was founded in 1932. In 1933 it was renamed the American Society of Tool Engineers; from 1960 until 1969 it was named the American Society of Tool and Manufacturing Engineers. From 1970 until 2013 it was called the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. In 2013 it was legally renamed SME. SME is a professional society of students, faculty, organizations, and individuals involved in manufacturing.
This collection contains correspondence, announcements, conference reports, and membership lists of the Wayne State University student chapter of the American Society of Tool and Manufacturing Engineers (ASTME). The Wayne student chapter disbanded in 1967. The current Wayne State University student chapter of SME was founded in March, 1990.
