Alex Barbour was born in Montreal, Canada on December 12, 1912. He was a resident of Detroit, Michigan from 1923 until 1967. He first became a member of UAW Local 7 when he worked for the Chrysler Corporation Kercheval Avenue Plant in 1937. Throughout his career he served on numerous CIO Community Service Committees. He became Secretary-Treasurer of the Wayne County CIO Council during the years 1948 to 1958 and then served as President of the merged Wayne County AFL-CIO Council from 1958 until his sudden death on February 21, 1967. Barbour’s papers provided insight on his personal and professional activities and affiliations.
