This area of the Reuther's Web site currently encompasses approximately 300, fully transcribed, speeches delivered between 1965 and 1996 by American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President's Charlie Cogen, David Selden and Albert Shanker. The speeches are organized chronologically by date. Please contact Dan Golodner for project details.
In this speech, Shanker is at a local president’s meeting. He is in a question and answer session with the presidents talking about key reform issues that are before them at this convention.
In it, he addresses being in the education reform movement and talks about the reports that helped spawn the movement. Shanker then talks about testing teachers and how it is becoming increasingly harder to find talented people who want to teach. He says that the teaching profession needs to be more marketable; raise salaries, reduce class sizes and give teachers the tools they need to make themselves and the students successful.
