In Memoriam: Adam Shakoor (1947-2022)

Joins 36th District Bench

The Reuther Library is sorry to report the passing of Adam Shakoor, a former Chief Judge to the 36th District Court who had also served Detroit’s Deputy Mayor under the Coleman Young. He was in private practice as a lawyer during other parts of his professional life. He was 74 when he passed on March 20.

For those interested in studying Shakoor’s life and work in public service, the Reuther Library maintains his papers, which cover the period 1981-1993.  read more »

Gonzalez Award Now Available

A scholarship fund named for late colleague, Dr. María Gonzalez has been set up for students working with underrepresented collections at the Reuther Library. María inspired faculty, alumni and students alike, teaching in the classroom and working in the community, at organizations like Detroit’s co-working and business incubator, the Green Garage.  read more »

Albert Shanker Fellowship 2022

The Albert Shanker Fellowship for Research in Education is now accepting applications! Apply by April 1 (decisions available by April 15).

This research grant, offered by AFT and the Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs, provides assistance for advanced graduate students and junior/senior faculty utilizing the American Federation of Teachers archives as well as collections related to educational history housed at the Walter P. Reuther Library. Two grants in the amount of $600 each will be awarded in support of research.  read more »
